Linseed and Gardens is an archive-based projection mapped video that tells the story of the historic Close House in Iowa City, IA. By incorporating history and landscape, this project displays both the native prairie remnants and wildflowers of the land the home inhabits and archival materials from the home. Historic floor plans, photographic negatives, historic registry documents, Sanborn maps and stereographs are reinterpreted through the camera and as overhead transparencies that are combined with linseed oil, the product that the Close family factory produced across the street from the home. This archival material accentuates the features of the homes’ exterior through projected window vignettes and colorful prairie landscapes. The present use of the house as the Center for Afrofuturist Studies is incorporated through the voice of current artist in residence, Courtney Desiree Morris. The home is described detail by detail through the audio narration and the script is derived from the Report on Present Conditions and Recommendations for the Restoration of the Close House.
