In the full version of Melancholia, a performance is created on each of the 9 swings on the grounds of the Fergus Falls State Hospital. The performances are then arranged into the shape of the floorplan of the hospital in a map-like fashion. The audio is from historical newspaper files documenting all of the suicides that took place on the grounds of the hospital. The music is created from the actual floorplan itself; each line intersection of the floorplan creates a unique note, and the floorplan is “played” from left to right utilizing electronically coded software to assign notes to the imagery.
